6 Effective Ways to Help Combat Maskne!

Are you suffering from maskne (mask acne)?

Salam lovely ladies!

Do you have red pimples or white bumps around your mask area? Either way, I have here some tips that InsyaAllah may help you in your maskne journey.

1) Wash your face with a gentle cleanser that doesn't ruin the pH level of your skin. Our skin is naturally on the acidic side at pH level of slightly under 5. At this pH level, our skin will be able to help fight any bacteria that contributes to acne. I recommend COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser.

2) Look for acne treatments that contain salicylic acid or centella. These are ingredients that are gentle on the skin and won't further irritate it. I recommend COSRX Centella Blemish Ampoule.

3) If you still choose to apply makeup, opt for mineral makeup that allows the skin to breathe and won't clog your pores. I recommend Sephora Collection Mineral Foundation Compact or Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Airbrush Foundation for light to full coverage respectively.

4) You still need to moisturize! When your skin lacks moisture, it produces more oil to balance that. Not applying moisturizer thinking it makes your skin oilier is counter intuitive. I recommend COSRX Oil-Free Ultra-Moisturizing Lotion with Birch Sap.

5) Don't forget to wash your mask! This seems common sense but I cannot stress enough on the importance of washing your mask after every use. I use my face wash to wash my face mask (more on this later). This way I know I'm using as gentle a "detergent" as I possibly can. Baby body wash works too I guess?

6) Use silk masks! Silk is the most breathable natural fibre available and probably your best bet, in terms of face masks, in combating your maskne according to Dr Dendy Engelman, a consultant dermatologist. It allows your skin to breathe and creates the least friction on your sensitive skin.

Due to its nature, it doesn't retain heat as compared to other face masks, so the warmth from breathing in and out has become more comfortable.

But not all silk masks are made the same. Some are made only for aesthetics; with an outer silk layer but an inner cotton layer.

Some are made with lower Momme silk quality meaning a lower thread count and are therefore thinner and lower quality.

Others claim to be silk but are in fact, satin polyester. Satin is a type of weave, not a type of fabric. When someone says it's made of 100% satin, it really doesn't give any information about what it is made up of. Satin can be satin cotton, satin chiffon or satin polyester etc. It is weaved a certain way to give off a sheen or shine to look beautiful. But satin masks are not equivalent to silk masks. It will not have the same skin care benefits as silk fabric.

To ensure you get the highest quality of silk masks, elmodesta source silk fabric directly from a silk manufacturing plant who harvest their own silkworms. These silkworms feed on leaves of Mulberry trees which are known to be the best type of silk.

Hope the information here has been useful. Let me know if you have in fact suffered from maskne and what you have done so far to fight it.

And if you're keen to try out elmodesta's silk masks, found here, we're having an ongoing BUY 2 GET 1 FREE promotion. So you're technically getting 3 masks at a much lower price.

Till next time!

Omg! I’ve been having masknes recently since I used new skincare products and constantly using masks. I also don’t know it’s important to find proper fabric for a mask. Thank you for this!
